The Australian distilling industry is one of the fastest-growing and most diverse in the world. A multitude of styles is being made today in all corners of our glorious continent. We encourage you to discover them wherever you might be in the world. We are the Australian Distillers Association, a collection of distillers from the far north of our country to the bottom of Tasmania and stretching from East to West.
Our charter is simple; to promote the wares of Australia’s best distillers. To become a full member you need to be able to display integrity, your own a functioning still, and a shared passion in crafting great spirits. When you see the ADA logo associated with an Australian distiller you know that this is a credible Australian distillery making product sustainably and ethically. And it will probably taste pretty good, too, Our formal charter is as follows: The Australian Distillers Association is the peak industry body for Australian distillers, and was founded in 2004.
It aims to:
1. Nurture the union of Australian distillers by promoting industry activities which further strengthen the distiller’s community
2. Create opportunities to share information through industry forums and workshops
3. Promote the knowledge and science of distillation
4. Support the introduction of an Australian Spirits competition
5. Lobby and work with established government and non-government organizations who share similar goals and philosophies
6. Encourage and invite allied industry and consumer enthusiasts to become involved with ADA activities and events

Australian distillery has become a veritable force in the global market of craft distilling. While certain regions have gained more traction with certain products, citing better water, climates for barrel aging, or sheer experience, the number of awards we’ve collectively attracted in the last few years alone means we’re now viewed as serious players on the craft distilling field.
History of Australia distilleries
Australia is the only island continent, the sixth-largest country in the world, where 60 percent of the population huddle around five coastal cities. It is a land of droughts and flooding rains. A landscape of tropical jungles, deserts to snowy alpine mountains, where sugar cane plantations and vineyards are as bountiful as the fields of grain. It should come as no surprise the similar extremes can be found in Australian whiskey. These extremes make Australia’s whiskeys fascinating, diverse, and surprising.
Whiskey production has been continuous in Australia since 1822, becoming the fourth largest whiskey-producing country between 1920 and 1970. At the genesis of the new micro-distilling trend, the last of the large column and pots distilleries closed in the 1990s. One of these late 19th century distilleries was the largest malt whiskey distillery in the world in the 1920s with a massive 220,000-litre mash tun. Australia’s boutique micro-distilling movement started back in the 1990s; today over 100 distilleries make whiskey in Australia. Most distilleries here are small and often infrequent in their production.
